MicroTCA builds on the strength of AdvancedTCA to deliver a standardized platform for smaller systems that need to meet lower-cost parameters. MicroTCA is built around the Advanced Mezzanine Card (AdvancedMC) modules originally developed for AdvancedTCA and other systems.
A key feature of MicroTCA is that it allows multiple packaging options. Unlike standard AdvancedTCA, it meets the 300mm equipment practice. It also supports flexible switching architectures like ATCA, and can be configured to support carrier-grade availability with full NEBS compliance.
This means packaging will be one of the biggest variables in MicroTCA, and there are a number of standard packaging options defined. These include Pico for very small systems, mainly with two or four AMC modules; an 8-inch cube for a fixed configuration with 12 AMCs; and a very flexible 19-inch-rack configuration that can be scaled from about 12 AMCs up to 192 AMCs.

There are 12 AMC modules connected by Gigabit Ethernet, PCI Express, or perhaps some other fabric; and there is also a fabric interface consisting of 21 differential pairs that connects everything together. An AC or 48V DC power module provides switched power to each slot, and a MicroTCA Carrier Hub (MCH) provides the shelf management and switching.
